How to Replace the Wick

wicpad

None of the cutter manufacturers provide replacement wicks. Sometimes it becomes necessary to replace the wick because of clogging or because it gets ruined in an attempt to clean the insides of the cutter.

Below are instructions that have been around for years for making and replacing a wick. I have never tried this, never having had the need. We do, however, get asked this question quite a lot and it seems to work for most folks.

The instructions are for a Toyo Pistol Grip. The directions for any other cutter would generally be the same. Obviously, the diagrams would look different.

Step 1-2 - Wick ReplacementpadPlease excuse the diagrams. When we get the time, we will clean them up for you. All right, here we go!!

1) Remove the head from the cutter being careful not to lose the spring. Carefully remove the wick from the shaft using small needle-nose pliers or tweezers.

2) Feed a doubled-over .011 inch diameter wire through the injection hole (head end) into the body of the pistol grip. Using a larger 1/16th" wire, with a hook bent on the end , insert it into the filler hole and guide the doubled wire out the rear of the handle. See diagram above.

3) Open the loop of the doubled-over small wire and insert a 2" length of knitting yarn through the loop as shown above. No, it doesn't matter what color it is.

4)Pull the wire and yarn through the injection hole (head end) about 1/4". Trim the yarn to about 1/8" beyond the tip. Reassemble your cutter.
